Travelling and friendships

I end up spending most of my time in Grenoble with Remon, but we meet up with Julie for dinner. “Is it not weird to be staying with your former French assistant?” he asks me half-jokingly and in reference to Julie, who I befriended while she worked at a school in Northampton. I explain that I was never actually taught by her, only by her flatmates.

But that's not really the point. Since she left Northampton three years ago, we stayed in touch only loosely, so I understand why Remon is surprised that I've chosen to visit her now. Nevertheless, the pleasure of her current company is a good reminder of why we were ever friends in Northampton. On top of that, this time round I've made another friend, in Remon.

Sadly, I leave Grenoble tomorrow and both these friendships will be put on hold. The effects of distance are inevitable, but whenever circumstances allow, it is a joy to revisit these friendships. Fortunately, Julie and Remon are both keen travellers, with friends around the world, so we're all used to it.
