The cheese caves of Chambéry

“I am the man of constant sorrow... I've seen trouble all my days...” Country music seems like a strange decision by the driver for six o'clock in the morning, but it provides the tinny soundtrack for this short coach journey back from Grenoble.

By the time I reach Chambéry, the morning light is glowing warmly over the mountains. The high street is still empty and I arrive before the opening time at Denis Provent, a famous cheese shop that a colleague in London persuaded me to visit. He used to do business with the eponymous owner, and said I might be able to visit their underground cheese caves.

No such luck: the owner isn't in today, but his daughter is happily surprised to hear from her friend in London, and gives me a bottle of Chartreuse, the regional drink that I'm come to know quite well.
