The train I take from here to Milan is a continuation of the TGV service that brought me to Chambéry. It surprises me to see Italian border guards appear in the carriages to conduct passport checks, considering anyone crossing this border by car, for example, has not needed to carry a passport since the Schengen Area was established in 1995.
I raise this point with a snotty boarder guard, and in reply I'm asked if I'd rather leave the train. Despite urges of stubbornness, it's more convenient for me to be in Milan than the middle of the nowhere, and I return to my seat. The carriage smile and nod in awkward solidarity.
