A morning walk around Verona reveals that it's quite a small city, overshadowed in its reputation by its older sister Venice. I wasn't expecting anything of Verona anyway. That's not to say there's nothing to do here, but it's time for a pit-stop. After all, I must be almost half-way to Alexandria.
It was in “fair Verona” that Shakespeare did “lay the scene” for Romeo and Juliet, and it was through the gates of the city that he had Romeo's horses charge during the character's flight from the city. Strangely, the gates are just as I first visualised them, years ago as I leant over a copy of the text in an English classroom.
On the main square, Piazza Bra, is the Arena, a Roman amphitheatre where the backstage crew are making preparations for tonight's opera. A sphinx and a wall of hieroglyphs are wheeled past me. Am I being mocked?
