This journey is a culmination of months of planning, paperwork and dreaming. In fact, the dreaming has taken place over a course of several years, informed by other people's stories of travelling. I have never left Europe overland, but for a long time have been engrossed by the travel notes of journalists, anthropologists and even pilgrims who have done so.
The journey I have planned now would have excited my teenage self, who read those books and privately couldn't wait to start travelling alone. As a teenager I travelled countless times to London from this familiar station in my home-town of Northampton. Waiting on the platform now is undoubtedly just an extension of that travelling habit, but my destination is arguably grander.
